The first few minutes
Take your time and follow these basics in order. Your device will guide you through the details as you go.
Buy directly from Ledger or an authorized reseller. Your device should arrive reset and ready for you to initialize. If it comes with a recovery phrase already written down, stop: never use a pre-filled phrase. Only trust the recovery phrase generated on your own device.
Download Ledger Wallet (formerly Ledger Live) only from Ledger’s official website or your device’s official app store. Connect your wallet and follow the in-app checklist to choose a PIN and update the device if prompted. Keep your device nearby and use a trusted computer or phone during setup.
Your device will create a secret recovery phrase, usually 24 words. Write each word in order on the recovery sheet and check every spelling. Store it somewhere private and durable, away from cameras and internet-connected devices. This phrase is the master backup to your assets: anyone who sees it can take control.
A few rules worth remembering
Ledger will never ask you to share your recovery phrase. No support agent, website, or app needs it.
Never photograph, email, message, or type your phrase into a computer or phone.
Read transaction details on your hardware wallet screen before approving anything.
Ignore urgency and unexpected links. Go directly to official Ledger resources instead.
